Settings Reference
A complete reference for every option in SquirrelCache Settings — organized by section.
Open Settings by tapping the gear icon in the top-right corner of the main screen.
Backup Defaults
These settings control the default behavior when you start a new backup. You can always override them on the main screen for an individual export.
Filter Mode
Sets the default photo selection method when the app opens.
| Value | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Date Range | App opens with the date range picker active (default) |
| Photo Picker | App opens with manual photo selection active |
Generate CSV Log
Default: On. When enabled, each backup generates a .csv file alongside the exported photos. The CSV contains one row per exported file with columns including: filename, creation date, camera model, camera make, lens model, ISO, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, file size (bytes), and human-readable file size.
Export as ZIP
Default: Off. When enabled, all exported files (including the CSV log) are compressed into a single .zip archive named with the export timestamp (e.g., Export_2026-04-02_14-30-45.zip). The ZIP is created after all individual files are exported; progress during ZIP creation is reflected in the progress bar's final 10%.
Export Live Photo Components
Default: On. When enabled, Live Photos are exported as pairs — both the still image and the video component — with Apple's Content Identifier metadata written to both files. When disabled, only the still image is exported. See Live Photos for details.
Group Live Photos in Folders
Default: On. When enabled, each Live Photo pair is placed in its own subfolder (e.g., LivePhoto_IMG_1234/). When disabled, all files are placed flat in the export folder. Only applies when Export Live Photo Components is also enabled.
Filename Prefix
Sets the default prefix for exported filenames. See File Naming for the full list of 9 options and examples.
Filename Delimiter
The character inserted between the prefix and the original filename. Options: underscore _ (default), hyphen -, space, or none.
Export Location
The default destination folder for backups. Tap Change to open the folder picker. The path is stored as a security-scoped bookmark and persists between sessions. Clear the bookmark by changing the location or clearing app data.
Appearance
Theme & Colors
Choose from 10 built-in color themes. The theme affects the background, text, accent, and card colors throughout the entire app.
| Theme | Character |
|---|---|
| Squirrel | Default — deep teal with light blue accents |
| Light | Bright white background, professional and minimal |
| Dark | Near-black background, low contrast mode |
| Midnight | Deep navy blue with subtle blue accents |
| Vintage | Warm brown and gold tones |
| Cherry | Deep red with warm accents |
| Ocean | Deep blue with bright cyan highlights |
| Peach | Warm, light peachy tones |
| Lavender | Soft purple hues |

Language
Set the display language for the app interface. SquirrelCache supports 14 languages:
English · Spanish · French · German · Italian · Portuguese (Brazil) · Dutch · Japanese · Korean · Chinese (Simplified) · Arabic · Russian · Turkish · Hindi
Changing the language restarts the app interface to apply the new strings. iOS system dialogs (photo picker, share sheet) use the system language regardless of this setting.
Advanced
Clear Documents and Data
Deletes all data stored by SquirrelCache including export history records, security-scoped folder bookmarks, cached temporary files, and all app settings. Your photo library and previously exported files are not affected.
This action cannot be undone. You will need to re-grant folder access and reconfigure your settings after clearing.
Largest Videos
Opens a view that lists the largest video files in your photo library, sorted by file size (largest first). Use this to identify videos that may be consuming significant device storage. You can delete videos directly from this view.
Export History
Opens the full export history and statistics dashboard. See Export History for details.
Support
Email Support
Opens your default mail app with a pre-filled email to the SquirrelCache support address. Use this to report bugs, ask questions, or request features.
Tip Jar
SquirrelCache is completely free to use — all features are available with no paywall or subscription. The Tip Jar is entirely optional and offers four one-time in-app purchase options to support development.
Tips are processed by Apple through StoreKit. They are consumable purchases — they don't unlock features and can't be restored. They're simply a way to say thanks if you find the app useful.
Rate the App
Opens the App Store listing for SquirrelCache. Ratings and reviews help other users discover the app and are genuinely appreciated.
